Thanthai Periyar was a rationalist, a great social reformer and a disciplinarian. He strove hard for the upliftment of the downtrodden and suppressed. He preached for eradication of superstitious beliefs which stand as an obstacle against one's own improvement. He aimed for equality of women with men and education for all.

This school has been named after him to achieve his ideals.
